If you can, log in on two devices. One for talking to me, the other to be the camera.
The one that is designated as the camera, should be muted during the consult to limit feedback.
If you can, have a second adult to operate the “camera” that way your hands are free
If you can, set yourself in a location where light is facing you, (in your eyes so to speak). Avoid sitting in front of a window, the back light (even if curtains are there) will make you appear to be a shadow to me.
If you can, think about pre-recording short video of your baby doing what you are trying to show me. Especially if he/she doesn’t “do it” everytime. Meaning, fuss at latch, or slipping off, of making sounds etc these are a few examples of something you might want me to see, but your baby may or may not do when we have the actual consult. You can text or email those short videos to me ahead of time.
If you can, consider taking pictures of your baby lying flat on his/her back so I can see the posture. Take pictures of inside your baby’s mouth while another adult lifts the tongue to show the frenulum undeath. A good way to do this to hold the shutter button down, taking bursts of photos, then picking out the clearest ones. Or take a video.
If your consult is about feeding, and you live close enough to have borrowed a scale from me, consider taking a pre-feed weight with nothing but a diaper. Write the weight down in case the scale shuts off before you are ready for the post weight. Or take a pic of it with your phone. The grams mode or ounces mode, will be useful for seeing how much baby drinks. The pounds mode will be useful for weekly weight checks but not for checking intake at one feeding.
If your consult is about follow up after frenectomy, consider having someone take a video of you doing a stretch session and letting me see it.
If your consult is about pumping, have your pump set up and ready when we start the consult
If your consult is about nipple damage or injury, consider sending me pictures of the damage and pictures of what your nipple looks just before a feeding, and right after a feeding.
When sending me photos or videos, you can send by text or email if you are comfortable with that. If you prefer more privacy, you can log into the Mobile Lactation App that you used to send me your intake forms. You will find a chat option inside the app. Text me to let me know that you sent me something via that private chat option.
